Beauty and the Beast and May 1st

I went to the cinema tonight to watch Beauty and the Beast. My niece recommended it! 🙂 It was good! I liked the songs. It was a bit scary at times, but still good. I might get in on DVD when it comes out.

Yesterday was May 1st, which is celebrated in Finland with balloons, parades etc. The market square was jam packed with people… Usually the market square is empty except for a few sellers and a few customers or other people walking across it. But a couple of times a year it is filled with people and hard to move around. People bump into you all the time.

There are different parades, old cars and people walking. On the square they sell ice cream (which they do the whole summer), licorice, thin pancakes, grilled sausages, balloons, toys etc. There is also music. As usual I went to the town hall and listened to a male choir singing. Here is a picture of them standing on the balcony, singing:

Across the street from the town hall is the church. Lots of people listening to the choir:

This shows only a small portion of the people. The white hats are given (well, you have to buy them yourself…) to high school graduates. But these days other schools can have similar white hats with tassels, so they are not exclusive for high school graduates anymore. The white hats can turn slightly yellow after some decades.

My hat is still white:

The thing that is attached on the black rim is golden and must be bought separately from a store that sells earrings, necklaces etc.

In the afternoon we went to my sister-in-law. I took a few pictures of the dogs that had much fun rolling around in the dry grass… (Click on the images to enlarge them)

The black one is already 9 years old (he will be 10 in June) and the dog in the third picture has just turned 13.

Finally a picture of two small flowers that I found in my sister-in-law’s garden:

Actually there were three flowers, I think, but I only got two of them in a picture. I don’t know what they are called, but they are a sign of spring. 🙂

May 1st celebration

May 1st is celebrated in Finland. On the market square there are thousands of people; buyers and sellers. They sell balloons with helium in them, ice cream, licorice, cotton candy, grilled sausage, toys and lots more. They also have different parades and things like that. One parade is old cars. A lot of people like to go for motorcycle rides on May 1st and they will gather somewhere and go together. It’s difficult to walk around on the market square with so many people pushing from different directions. And sometimes you can only take a few steps before the way is blocked by several people. But, it’s part of May 1st.

I took the camera with me this year. It was cloudy as can be seen in the first picture. But between the clouds were also some blue sky. It was around +10 to +13 degrees (I went 11.15 am from home and came back 1.30 pm). On the town hall balcony (second picture) and male choir sang in Swedish. A male choir singing in Finnish came before the Swedish group. They sang for about 30 minutes from noon. The third picture is some of the many people listening to the choir. They are on the other side of the street, next to the church.

The white hats some of the people are wearing is the hat you have to buy when you graduate from high school. A lot of people like to wear them on May 1st. If the hats are not stored properly they can turn yellow/beige after decades. Some of the choir members have yellowish/beige hats, because most of the singers are old and probably got their hats many decades ago. I keep my white hat in the original plastic bag inside the original cardboard box it came in. I wore it for a while today but I also had a baseball cap, which is much more comfortable. Before the white hats were only given to those who graduate high school. But later they started giving it to people graduating from other schools as well. Those other graduates might have tassels on their hats. I noticed one white hat does have a tassel, so it means he graduated from another school, not high school.

There are a lot of these yellow coltsfoot flowers on the grass now. Large areas can filled with these small flowers.

While I was listening to the choir singing, there was a little bit of rain, but not much.

I bought some licorice and an ice cream. No matter what weather it is on May 1st, I always want to eat an ice cream bought from the market square. This year I chose lemon-licorice. Yummy! 🙂 I ate it while walking home. I also gave some euros to a Red Cross man collecting for Nepal.

It was nice to come home after all the noise and people on the market square. Here at home is quiet. Mum is at grand mum’s house with my sister’s family.

In less than three hours it’s time for the Ice hockey world championships!! 😀 First game: Finland vs. USA. 🙂

Cold and snowy

Cold and snowy

I really didn’t think I would need my winter coat in April. But apparently I did… It’s +0 C at the moment. Last night there came some heavy snow (which is almost completely melted now), but it feels really cold outside. Definitely more like winter than spring. The sun is shining a little bit, but no warmth comes from the sun. 😦

Niki looked so cute yesterday when he was sleeping on my couch. 😀

This morning I finished reading James Bowen’s “The world according to Bob”. 🙂 Very cute story! You should read it if you haven’t already read it. The first book “A street cat named Bob” is available in around 30 different languages. I am sure they will translate the second book into just as many languages too.

I read 11 books in March. Theodore Boone, a crime story, two books with crime novellas (short stories), and some books with 150-160 pages. A couple of books for young people too.

So I have one book read in April now. Reading the third TB book at the moment. Also have borrowed some crime stories from the library, so I will start reading those in April too.

A bit annoying with all the April’s fool jokes on the Internet and in newspapers. Luckily it’s only one day of the year…

I went to buy a new table cloth for the kitchen table today. As usual we have table cloths made of wax, because they are so simple to wipe clean. The one I chose is beige and have some different kinds of flowers and unreadable text on it.

The old table cloth mum will put on the balcony table later, when it’s warm enough to sit on the balcony.

Got some yarn in the mail today! 😀 Also got a crochet hook and instructions on how to crochet a large elk! 🙂 So I have started with the head already. But it’s a bit tricky with the very thick yarn. Will post a photo whenever it is ready.

Pretty warm today

Pretty warm today

Sometimes the cat acts more like a young cat than the old one he is. 😉 I don’t know what he was doing with the towel that he likes to sleep on. He was attacking it and tried to crawl under it or inside it. Crazy cat!

It’s pretty warm today and once again all snow is gone. I really hope there won’t be any more snowy days this spring. Now it should stay like this so it can become summer.

I need to read three more books before the month is over… May be I can do it. Still a few more days. But I have to read thin books. I don’t have time to read three thick books. Today I finished reading John Grisham’s “Theodore Boone: The Abduction”. It was very good. I have all the other T.B. books too, but have read only the first, and now the second. Two more T.B. books to read. I am sure I will be able to finish another T.B. book before the month is over.

But now I have to take a shower, before I start reading again. Tonight I am going to watch a TV show called “Kadonneen jäljillä”, a Finnish TV series where they are looking for people that are missing. Usually it is a person looking for his/her biological mother or father or other siblings. Always interesting to see when they are traveling the world looking for people. Usually emotional too in the end if they find a mum or dad that they haven’t seen in 30 years or more.

Spring is in the air!

It does feel like spring today. 🙂 The sun is shining, and it’s warming a little, but at the same time the strong winds make it feel a bit cold too. But where the wind doesn’t blow, it feels nice and warm!

I saw a couple of people sitting against a wall, eating ice cream… Another sign of spring. 🙂

Tonight I am going to watch Gravity on DVD. 🙂 I don’t really know what it is about, but I figured if it got six Oscars, it should be worth watching!

Tonight I also want to make some strawberry quark! But I must find the recipe first and go to the grocery store. I don’t remember what the ingredients were, apart from the obvious… Strawberries and quark. 😉 May be it was whipped cream and sugar? I have made the quark once before, so I should have the recipe in the kitchen.

It’s getting closer… Only a week left to the Australian F1 GP!!! 😀 It’s going to be interesting to see what will happen, who are fast and who are slow. I am sure a motor or two will blow up! I just hope it’s not Kimi’s or Valtteri Bottas’ car that will give up in the first race of the season…
